The Governor Shop, of Edmonton, Alberta Canada recently upgraded a 14.64L, 6 cylinder Caterpillar G3406 engine to a GAC control system, noting it's ease of installation and superior performance.  Components selected included an:

  • ATB652T2N-24 high performance, sealed, integrated actuator / throttle body assembly.

  • ESD5526E Light Force (Low Current Optimized PID) governor featuring an Anti-Windup circuit specifically designed for gaseous-fueled engine control.

  • EAM121 interface module that converts a nominal 0 VDC ± 3.0 VDC to a nominal 5 VDC ± 5.0 VDC signal making the existing Woodward Easygen controller compatible with the GAC governing system.

The PCI105 module provides the ability to switch from 50 to 60 Hz generator frequency when combined with any ESD5100, ESD5200 or ESD5500 series controller.  It features two potentiometers to independently adjust each speed / frequency and is powered by the 10 volt output from the controller’s terminal ‘N’. FAQ OF THE MONTH: HOW DO YOU TROUBLESHOOT A 110 SERIES ACTUATOR?

ACD110 actuators are used on Deutz 1011 and 2011 series 2, 3 and 4 cylinder engines in place of the electric stop solenoid.  The actuator’s lever is in direct contact with, and controls the position of the fuel rack.

If you suspect the actuator is not functioning properly, measure the coil resistance between the actuators terminals.
   

At room temperature:

1.6 Ohms on a 12 VDC actuator

7.2 Ohms on a 24 VDC actuator

Confirm coil isolation, measure resistance between each individual terminal pins and the actuator’s housing.

>1M Ohm = no continuity


Remove the actuator.  Hold the actuator with the lever side down and manually move the actuator’s shaft through its range by depressing the lever.  There should be no binding, sticking or friction.  Energize the actuator to full fuel (follow steps in the speed control unit publication).  The actuator should operate smoothly throughout its entire stroke without any interruption in motion.

If the actuator passes these tests, the problem is likely elsewhere in the governor or fuel system.  Confirm all wiring and connector terminations, refer to the speed controller’s troubleshooting guidelines.

Note: When using the 110 Series on a Deutz 1011 4 cylinder; the engine must be equipped with Deutz's extra start fuel spring 0417478 whish helps with light-load instability and transient performance.

Some applications have experienced engine starting difficulties with an ACD110 actuator when it’s paired with certain controllers.  The ESD2210 speed controller is recommended for use with these 110 series actuators for single speed / standalone applications.  It offers an optimized PID and provides full actuator current immediately during start.

For variable speed or generator paralleling applications, the ESD5528EM governor is recommended for its flexibility and combination of features.  The ESD5528EM also applies full actuator current immediately during start.
