APPLICATION OF THE MONTH: PUMA OCEAN RACING TEAM
   
The Puma Ocean Racing Team recently installed a Perkins N844 four cylinder engine to adjust the keel on one of their sailboats.  A GAC ALR160-S04 actuator and an SDG725 Smart Digital Governor was selected because the application required a fast, compact, flexible variable speed system that could be controlled from above or below deck.   The ALR160 actuator was installed in the PF pump housing, in place of the shut-off solenoid, acting directly on the fuel control rack.

Sea trials were conducted and this control system exceeded all expectations, sending this customer off to the races.

FAQ OF THE MONTH: 

WHAT ARE THE ELECTRONIC GOVERNOR CONTROL OPTIONS FOR THE PT SYSTEM DEPENDING UPON THE TYPE OF PUMP BEING USED? 

GAC offers three governor configurations for the PT system depending upon the type of pump being used.

The ADC225JS-12/24 is the recommended universal actuator to control a PT pump with a mechanical governor, it’s connected to the existing throttle lever through an external linkage.  The ADC225JS-12/24 has a higher rate internal return spring for optimum RPM stability and comes with a commercial connector, a 7 foot long (2.13m) mating harness and lever assembly.  It’s compatible with a variety of either digital or analog speed controllers that are selected based upon the type and combination of features that best fits the application.


If an EFC actuator is in the PT pump, it can be controlled with either a forward or reverse acting GAC governor.  PT pumps use both Normally Closed / Forward Acting and Normally Open / Reverse Acting integrated actuators and you have to identify which type you have to select the correct speed controller.  PT pump actuators often have the “C”, for Normally Closed, stamped between its terminals, or the letter “O” for Normally Open.


If the pump’s EFC actuator is inoperable or if you prefer to avoid the potential interaction between the electronic governor and mechanical governor, the fuel metering function can be performed by the ADB120E4 integrated fuel metering valve / actuator.  The ADB120E4 replaces the PT pump actuator and can be installed on any Cummins engine with the optional BK114 mounting bracket.

The discharge fitting of the PT pump is connected to the inlet of the ADB120E4 valve.  The outlet from the valve is connected to the fuel common rail that feeds the injectors.
