THE 103 SERIES

Perkins 1103 / 1104 and Iveco’s 4.5L and 6.7L NEF engines are equipped with GAC’s ADD103B-12/24 actuators installed on their Delphi fuel injection pumps.The ADD103B actuator mounts directly onto the governor cover of the Delphi pump, which is made with an access port and mounting bosses specifically for this actuator.  The ADD103B engages the governor linkage hook, for direct control of fuel metering, providing fast response and precise speed control.

APPLICATION OF THE MONTH: 

GAC ESD5500E Series Governor - Controlling a Cummins KTA50-G9 – 2220 HP – 50L – V16 Engine

GAC’s ESD5500E governor is a long standing versatile, very popular governor that can be applied to multiple engine / actuator   applications. It features:

  • Isochronous, Droop & Variable Speed Operation
  • Idle Control and Speed Trim Capability
  • Starting Fuel and Speed Ramping Adjustment
  • Auxiliary Accessory Input and +10V Accessory Supply
  • Soft Coupling / Lead Circuit

It’s available in Standard, Light Force, Light Force with Enhanced Droop Control and with an Anti-Wind-up circuit for optimum control of gaseous fueled engines using GAC’s integrated Actuator/Throttle Bodies, universal or linear actuators.  

A Steel Mill in Brazil’s Minas Gerias State, contracted ‘Distribuidora Cummins Minas Ltda (DCML)., the largest Cummins Distributor in Brazil, to install and maintain their emergency cooling water system that requires the capacity to displace 3600m3 of water per hour (over 951,000 gallons per hour).   

DCML installed a KTA50-G9 engine with a PT fuel system and EFC actuator, controlled by an ESD5500E series governor, to drive the water pump.  The pump runs on an automated system and will come on-line if there is a power failure or any other interruption in their cooling water supply.  It’s programmed to start in idle speed control for 20 seconds then accelerate under speed ramp control to 1800 RPM.  The rate of acceleration is set to correspond with the opening rate of the water repression valve.  The system is programmed to run for one hour a day to confirm function and insure its availability in the event of an emergency.



FAQ OF THE MONTH: HOW DO I CALCULATE FREQUENCY AND RPM? DOES GAC OFFER CONTROLS FOR HIGH SPEED APPS? 

GAC analog and digital governors use the frequency from a magnetic pick up as the input signal for closed loop RPM control.  The magnetic pick-up, or speed sensor, produces a sinusoidal output as each ring gear tooth passes its magnetic pole:




Does GAC offer controllers for high speed application? 

Yes, if we use the example of a 3600 RPM application of an engine with 168 flywheel teeth, we’d know that we’ll need a governor capable of operating with an input frequency of 10,080 Hz.




We can select from digital governor models EEG6500 / EEG6550 that can accommodate frequencies from 100 to 12,000 Hz or analog governor models ESD5159 with a ranges from 100 to 10,500 Hz and ESD5500HF-II that ranges from 100 to 12,500 Hz.
